The Scaly-breasted Bul Bul. (Pycnonotus squamatus) 14 - 16 cm

Another beautiful bird from the Bul Bul family albeit less seen amongst the wide family type is the Scaly-breasted. To increase the chances of sighting them it would be advisable to know the fruiting season of which this specie's favorite. My personal experience has been sightings about 3 months apart.    

This category also prefer to forage on tree canopies which also makes for some difficulty to get good photos. The main habitat are broadleaved open forest up to about 1000 meters.

The Red-bearded Bee-Eater (Male) , (Nyctynornis amictus), 32 - 35 cm

This very 'dignified looking' bird never fails to arouse the excitement of birders and non-birders alike whenever it makes it's appearance. It is most unusual looking with it's crimson red plumage on it's chest. This has earned it the 'Red-bearded' description for this specie.

It's food comprise of flying insects and one could see it's graceful flight when going after them. Once targeted the 'victim' very seldom escapes. And once caught the insect is battered to death against the branch before being swallowed whole.

The habitat is usually in broadleaved evergreen forest up to around 1500 meters. Here are some photos for sharing.

The Mugimaki Flycatcher ( Ficedula mugimaki, 13 - 13.5 cm

The last time I chanced upon this winter visitor was in January 2009 in Frasers Hill. I was most fortunate to be the first to record this cute and agile little bird in Bkt Tinggi this time. The caretaker of the Japanese Gardens confirmed that the bird had just returned and I was very lucky to be there at the right time. I have always stressed that in birding, skills and knowledge aside, it's being at the right place AND at the right time that will present the birder with the prized trophies and going home smiling from cheek to cheek! :-)

The Mugimaki Flycatcher is amongst the smallest bird in it's category. Being active and not perching for more than a couple of seconds it is one bird that will give even the seasoned photographers a run for their money.

The 'adorable' Lesser Adjutant ( Leptoptilos javanicus, 122.5 - 129 cm)

This is one bird which one either love it or may find it quite 'intimidating'. Possibly because it's bald head reminds one of the infamous vulture, which feeds on dead cacass. Apart from the bald-pate yje Lesser Adjutant have nothing else in common with the vulture. It's main food are fish and other sea food which could be found in abundance around the mud flaps and mangroves, which the Lesser adjutant also call home.
