The White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus), 21.5 - 28 cm

This specie are great song birds known for it's wide repertoire of notes and very loud call it has also become a favorite of  'bird keepers' who buys them to be kept as pets. A permit is required to keep this specie. However due to lax enforcement this requirement is seldom adhered to. Which have caused the numbers to decrease in the wild due to unlawful poaching.

Here is both the male and female.

The White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus), 21.5 - 28 cm

Encounters with White-rumped Shamas is always interesting due in part to the high agility of this specie. The bird's long tail and colors also add to the flavor of each sighting. To top it all it is a great 'singer' with a few repertoire of calls which are rhythmic and very entertaining. Being a good song bird have also taken it's toll as the W-rS are poached from their natural forest habitat to be sold to 'bird-lovers' who caged them to hear their calls in their homes. :-(

Here are the W-rS photographed in the natural habitat truly 'free as a bird'.

The White-rumped Shama (Copsychus saularis) 21.5 - 28 cm

This specie is well liked for it's very melodious and varied calls which punctuates the quiet forest or rise above the sounds of insects, mammals and calls of other bird species. The sad part is many of them have been trapped and sold to erstwhile 'bird lovers' who believed it's 'lucky' to own one or just love their homes to be 'filled' with this bird's frequent calls.

 Have a nice day!

The White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus), 21.5 - 28 cm

It is fast becoming more and more difficult to sight the White-rumped Sharmas in the forest. The result of  unscrupulous bird trappers who systematically target this specie. The high price which buyers are willing to pay for them so as to enjoy the wide variety of melodies this bird  has become famous for have spurred the illegal trappers on. Just take a look at the You Tube featured videos and you will find a large number of these prolific and natural 'singers' locked-up in cages. It would be better served if this fine specie could remain free and in the wild so that it could continue to flourish and in so doing keep the population growing too.

Here are a few photos for sharing.

Hope you like what you see. Have a nice day!
